Because of its ideal location and the financially secure target market it was designed for, Modiin is characterized by meticulous planning and unprecedented investment in design and implementation. Construction adheres to the highest standards, as does the city’s infrastructure and landscaping.
The city, which is characterized by an abundance of sprawling greenery and modern sports and shopping centers, attracted hi-tech professionals and businessmen, army veterans, police officers and other professionals who have found it to be an excellent opportunity for upgrading their standards of living while still maintaining close proximity to the center of the country.
There was just one problem.
This promising new city was not addressing some deep-rooted Israeli needs. All traditional community services, so common in other cities and available for residents who require them, were sorely lacking from this picture-perfect scenery. Hundreds of families suddenly found themselves living in a spiritual desert; a beautiful, green spiritual vacuum.
Residents of various religious affiliations searched for appropriate educational frameworks for their children, synagogues for their Shabbat prayers, inspirational lectures, Jewish marriage or Bar Mitzvah preparations, and more – yet found none.
It was in response to this glaring lack that 2001 saw the establishment of Lemaan Achai – a social non-profit organization offering community, religious, educational and social services for all residents of Modiin.
Lemaan Achai Enters the Scene.
A delegation of passionate residents of Modiin turned to nearby Modiin Ilit to request their assistance in meeting their need for active Jewish centers and services. Providence led them to the right people; energetic visionaries who heeded their call and established Lemaan Achai.
The beginning was humble, yet it opened the door to the tremendous activity that was yet to come. A number of young men, all trained community rabbis, were sent to the silent main synagogue, where they were enthusiastically welcomed by the city’s rabbi and residents. One thing led to another, and soon, in response to the residents’ requests for additional local synagogues and courses, more and more community rabbis and lecturers were sent to inspire with their oratory – and with their very presence. The study halls soon became bustling Jewish community centers servicing residents of all religious affiliations.
Finally, the inhabitants of the city were finally able to enjoy lectures on various topics of Jewish tradition, preparatory programs for Bar Mitzvahs and marriage, and even educational and social activities for women, children and teens.
The residents, who had so pined for just this sort of facility, were beside themselves with joy.
